as the mother of a 5 year old it seems a bit hard to contemplate, but I guess our babies always grow up. At the age of 18 and 19 you really do not need you parents permission to go. If you still live under their roof it would be nice to have permission but in the eyes of the law you are classed as an adult.
Nine months is a long time and alot can happen. If I was mom I would want to know all details a plans of this trip and I would want a phone call everyday (not really possible once a week more realistically). As long as the girls going are level headed and aren't going to do silly jobs for money or run off and get married or pregnant in the first month, then it seems like it would be a good growing experiance. It will certainly teach a lesson of responsibility.
I wish you all the luck

Why go to cyprus for nine months! Go there for a fortnight and then go to australia for the other 8 and a half months. They speak english, its hot all year round and the guys are hotter. Need i say more!

Sorry bout this but i love austrlia, to answer the parent thing, if i was your parent i would not be happy cos you hear all kinds of horror stories and cyprus isn't the safest place to be going. Then again your old enough to make your own minds up and as long as you stay safe you'll have a great time! Have fun!!

Why????
I am not sure I would be happy if they were going there with no actual reason like education.
But since the girls are adults a parent can only voice her opinion.
If you are going please read and study all you can about the country, the laws, the people, the language, lifestyle etc. Teens get in trouble when they are in the Dark.
Could be fun but could be hell.

So many young adults go to other countries for new experiences and then get in trouble. Some with the laws in the other country (and then they find out the laws are so much stricter than the US and that they can be thrown in prison there for a long time awaiting trial with no representation). You can get dumped in jail or prison for litter, walking the wrong way, drinking in public, smoking in a kitchen, using the wrong public toilet etc. These countries are not as lenient as the US. Many things can and do happen. There have been horor stories in the news as parents beg and plead the US govt to get their kids our of jail and home.

Another thing is sex is viewed differently. Many of these countries the man has the POWER. Women are to be used and sometimes abused. They start out being romantic, charming and very attractive. Then it ends up being power and manipulation. US women are not used to this treatment. In some countries SEX is expected on the first date. And sex can be rough.

Please make sure that you really read and study all you can about the country you choose.

Hard question! especially as I am a mother now.
But when I was 18 (many years ago) I went to Greece for over a month with a friend. It was one of the best experiences of my life and I sure learnt a lot!
I made a few mistakes, but gained in so many other ways.

Now as a parent I would be very concerned about letting them go for so long, but I would also have to weigh up how much they would gain from the experience.
Cyprus is not that far away (nowadays) and if all goes pair-shaped then she could always come home.

TRICKY ONE - GOOD LUCK

I don't think that is a good idea. I don't think they should travel abroad w/o a chaperone, especially since Cyprus tends to have quite a bit of unrest.
Maybe you should contact the American embassy in Cyprus and find out how American tourists are being 'viewed' in Cyprus.
I am not up to date on what has been going on over there recently, but the last I heard, they were seeking membership in the EU and it wasn't working out b/c of the way some of their people, Turkish I believe, were being treated.
Civil unrest can be big trouble for foreign tourists if there is an uprising.

Wow now I think you should let them go, they are old enough to make their own choices, chances are they wont end up going anyway because at that age they change their minds like they do underwear! he he.
If you think that they should not go then just tell them that you would rather they went somewhere closer but if you want to go then go I wont stop you.
And another thing if they have asked your permission then they are very sensible girls as not many people their age would even bother, so they respect your opinion! Be honest but dont be too harsh as they will stop asking you and just do what they like x

parents NEVER have stupid answers, we know everything....right parents?...you teens just think were thick just like we did at your age, it's ok, we know....go to cyprus but dont be daft....wise up.....don't let your parents down....be sensible and never....ever accept an invitation of you are alone.....always take a mate.....the rest is up to you....dont be mistook for a mug and fend for yourself and your mates...it's a different country....they are not the same as the English....and don't mean that in a bad way....just be careful that's all....be careful and never accept any invite unless you are with someone....got me?

Let them enjoy themselves and have the experience.
I went away to work in a hotel when I was 17 and had a great time! Also grew up a lot during this time and learnt to stand on my own 2 feet.
Does more good than harm!
