Opera training is very specific and demanding. Are you in school? If you attend university, you can probably take a sequence of classes for opera; however, the general requirement is that you pursue the general music curriculum. Music conservatories are even better and more focused. If you are most fortunate, it is optimal to study opera in Europe where study is subsidized and singers are worshipped. Particularly in places such as Vienna, Paris, Barcelona, Moscow, Budapest, Milan, Rome and Prague.

Have you called the Detroit Opera House to ask them "How this stuff works?" If not, do so.

Start with voice lessons, specifically from a teacher who has experience in opera. Your teacher would be able to lead you in the right direction.

Go to the opera, wait afterwards, and ask whoever you can for some direction.
