You also have trees that are male/female and I know about genes and all that stuff but it makes you think, do they hurt and do they have feelings ect.
I sound a bit like a hippy I know but it has always bugged me.

No, plants do not have any feelings. However, due to their genetic make-up, the seeds from an apple will grow into an apple tree. The seed contains cells that contain DNA within their nucleus. This DNA is basically the blueprints for the cells of the plant to come. The seed also contains food for the embryo to help it grow. As far as gender goes, apple trees are monoecious meaning that they contain both male and female parts on the same plant. You are right that some plants are either male or female. These are called dioecious plants.
PS...hippies rock...go tree huggers!!!

They grow because of the expression of their DNA and growth hormones and other environmental factors. They don't think or have brains, so they shouldn't be able to feel pain or think. However, I have heard a few times (although I can't remember where, sorry, but it was probably in a botany class) that there are certain chemicals produced due to environmental stress. All higher plants (as far as I am aware of anyways) have male and female parts either on the same plant or on different organisms. Some plants can fertilize themselves, others can not. Just remember that plants are far more complex (and fascinating) biological systems than most of us give them credit for, but don't get to hopefully that your spider plant is going to be providing you with scintillating conversation anytime soon.

When you were still a fetus, did you think or feel anything? Did you know that you were going to grow up to eventually ask this let's just say "unique" question? I have to be real drunk to answer this one.
Maybe apple seeds think big and dream to one day grow into big sequoias?

they are programmed genetically and hormonally to respond to environmental cues...meaning they don't need to "think" about the action...it just happens

unless i am mistaken, plants don't have a nervous system. so without a CNS, they have no feelings.
