a. They are a good idea, but they must be built properly. You can't build a 700 mile fence on a border that is over 1,950 miles. You also can't build a fence that is only three feet tall or made out of chain-link, wood- and- post, etc. (There are 5 year olds that can climb over them.)
*****
What I would do:
a. Height: At least 15 feet.
b. Fence type: Chain-link fence with razor wire and barbed wire intertwined through it. (Anyone who is stupid enough to try and climb it will get exactly what they deserve.) There will be one wide gate that can be opened to let buses, trucks, cars, etc. through every 25 miles. Also, there should a large slab of concrete wall underneath the fence to prevent tunneling.
c. Other forms of security:
1. Cameras wherever the border patrol deems it necessary.
2. ARMED border patrol agents with vehicles best suited to the rocky desert terrain. They will patrol the border and be stationed at the gates. (They'll check the interior of the buses, trucks, cars, etc.)
3. Small helicopters to patrol from overhead.
4. (Hopefully.) Start pulling in U.S. troops and start sticking them on the border.
5. Force anyone that leaves food, water, and/or medical supplies on the border to leave. Then, take the supplies away.
-Incidentally: Leave about three inches of fencing without wire on the bottom just to make sure that small lizards, etc. won't get cut. I'd also keep a few veterinarians on hand. Also, if Mexico or some "do-gooder" wants to send doctors, fine. Just remind them that:
a. They are going to have to pay for the treatments with their OWN money.
b. The illegals will be immediately deported when they get bandaged up and ready to start the road to recovery.
c. Any potential anchor-babies born on U.S. soil would not get an automatic path to citizenship. Instead, they'd get sent back to Mexico with their mother's citizenship.
*****
b. Who is against the fence? Illegal immigrants and their relatives.
c. Why is the fence good? It blocks one wave of illegal immigrant from entering the country. After our border is secured, we can start working on deportation, tracking tourists, and on keeping tack of people that have visas. (We must make sure that the latter don't "mysteriously disappear.")

This thing, if built, will cost several billion dollars, and that is just the starting price estimate - we all know what happens with government projects - and will extend only 700 miles along a 2,000 mile border.
What kind of effectiveness can be expected from that? The damn thing is just a hugely expensive gesture.
And people along the border are upset about it, as it will interfere with farming, water rights, treaty obligations, ruin the scenery: they have a host of concerns.

The main reason is because illegal sending back cash is Mexico's biggest source of revenue. And I agree. We shouldn't put up a wall. We should install a minefield. If you make it through alive we let you stay.

I think it is a good idea. What many people fail to realize is that it is used in conjunction with other tools. We're not just going to put it up and expect it to stop every illegal.

Bad. A couple of reasons.
1. I think migration should be legal and pretty much unlimitted, so there's no point.
2. It wouldn't be that effective. If you seriously wanted to totally shut off migration, a fence isn't the tool. Total coverage with web cams that are being monitored by police would be more effective.

I think it's good becuase even though it's not long enough it can be used to bottle neck them into different places where they can be more easily caught. A wall better then no wall

The US/Mexico border fence will be good as it will prevent illegal passage of our borderline with Mexico, which has been and continues to be a chronic problem.

Bad. Not only will walls and fences do nothing to keep illegal immigrants out, they distract from larger, deeper questions like: Why are they coming here in the first place? and Is there anything we can do to make their lives better in their home countries so they won't have to risk their lives to get here?

Walls never work. All through History, thet have failed in the end.
The Great Wall of China
Hadrians Wall
The Berlin Wall to name some of the big ones!
I cannot think of any good reasons!! sorry!
