I mean, look at the list of banned books, which includes "A Wrinkle in Time," Huck Finn, and even "Little Red Riding Hood"! And there are so many commercials that prey upon this irrationality, reminding parents to "protect" their children from germs, allergens, etc. I grew up reading most of the top 50 banned books(some at a very young age) and was raised with germs everywhere and I turned out fine! Additionally, why is it that parents in our backward culture try to protect their children from sexuality or nudity more than violence? Does seeing a nipple really damage a child? Or is seeing 8,000 murders by the age of ten the real danger? (keeping in mind that violent crime hasn't increased in the U.S. in over 30 years, even with all of the violence on tv). what are your thoughts?

Parents aren't irrational. There must also be a good reason for some classic literature to be in the top fifty banned books in the U.S. Sure, you turned out fine. I bet you are as healthy as ever with germs everywhere. Good parents protect their children from all bad things, like many video games, some television shows, and R-rated movies. I could answer this question in a 3-page essay. Your answer is too broad, and you and people with similar thought processes are ignorant. This is because you can't expand the horizon and environs of your mind. You can't think uniquely; you all think similarly, and that portrays an ignorant mentality, especially when you all think the wrong ideas.

I absolutely agree and I am the mother of 4 sons (ages 8-18) I do not think any book or tv show should be banned. We live in the United States and freedom of speech either is or isnt. There is something for EVERYONE even if most dont agree with it....this privilege is why living in the United States rocks! I am one of the most open people in this world and I often feel as if I am the only one that feel that way. Many parents need to get a damn grip. Its a damn shame that my kids cant read Huck Finn in school but he can be trained to kill by the government ...oh yeah thats only to be used to protect and serve the country...BULLSH*T. PEOPLE OF THE WORLD...GET A GRIP!!!!!!!

Alot of things have changed so much in the past 30 years that it is no longer safe to let your young children play outside by themselves; walk to school and back by themselves; stay alone in the house by themselves.
I remember when you didn't use to have to lock your house when you left (or even when you're home) , take your keys out of your car, you trusted the neighbors completely with your children, you trusted the priests at your church, or the coach at your child's sport games, or even their teachers. Now, they are not safe with even the "safest" of people. No, reading those books, or seeing a nipple probably won't damage most kids....but are you willing to risk your child to the safety of the one in a million kid who feels no remorse after raping and killing a small toddler, or walking into a school house and gunning down a dozen or more students and teachers, or having sex with someone when you know you have HIV or AIDS.
I guess I am one of those irrational parents and now a grandparent and I thank God that I am!!! At least I have a heads-up on what is happening to my babies before anything bad can happen!!

this world is much more dangerous than when we were young.only today does the real focus of pedophiles, rapest, bird flu, e-colie, and all sorts of things we don't want to see. before having a boyfriend meant ...of corse he has met your parents. today young girls are getting pregnat by the thousands, influenced by t.v. and music...it's true...Real family values has deminished beond belief,as an adult, i have seen so many changes thats it's unreal,we used to have songs about love...now it's about strippers and drugs, along with body parts and killing. t.v. is more outragous than ever. you can't watch a drama without everyone swapping bodily fluids...with each other. We have people killing each other for the simplist things. Terrorist on our own soil, violence on t.v,,, a long time ago had to do with cowboys and indians...now every show, CSI, ,Law and order, all the night dramas are violent, with deaths . I will protect my baby from as much as I can...my mother did...and today it even harder.

Most definitely!!! And you don't need to have children to understand "their world". I was a kid once with an irrational mother. The stories I could tell you about her would make your head spin. I actually heard a mother on the news say "we need the authorities to tell us how to raise our children and keep them safe" and she meant it . I think she should not have reproduced. I would be arrested if I had children because I would actually let them read banned books and watch r rated movies and so on and so on

I am with you. What happened to parents explaining things, like how not to make fun of people with disabilities or of another race , how if you don't have anything good to say don't say anything. Of course you know most of what they learn do come their parents ways or lack of them.I guess its easier to blame a book , then to be parents.
