Borrow mom's car to take the test in, you will be covered under her insurance. Once you have your license and get a car, get insurance before you drive it. Going on your parent's policy is best if you are living at home.

Hi...I'm in IL myself. The correct answer is no, you don't need insurance under your own name to get a license; if you use your parents' vehicle they can add you to their policy as a secondary driver, even on a temporary basis, so you are covered while you use it to go get the license. If you get your own car, if registered in your name then you then need to be insured in your name...to save money, you can register the car in Mom or Dad's name & still be attached to the folks' policy, but beware...if you get in an accident while on their policy, THEIR rates go up...& they won't be too happy about that. So keep your nose clean! Good Luck and have fun.

You could go under your parents' insurance; just be sure that their policy covers you. Some do automatically, some have to have you listed individually as a driver.

You should only need insurance if you own or use a car.
