It's a bunch of things.
First the lighting does its bit, especially with flash photography that tends to make everything look a little bit frozen, as opposed to natural light.
Second, when you look in the mirror you don't see one image, you see a lot lot more: you get closer, you walk away. You look at your face, at your waist, at the whole, then just at the top and so forth. So you gather information and use this info to create a mental vision of what you look like. With a picture, it's just that one image. So it's not just that it's 2D and not 3D, it's that it's a poor reflection of a single moment.

i look awful in pics from digi cams, i also look awful in mirrors in big stores with lots of overhead tube lights, yet at home in my mirrors i look great, i get really paranoid about it. Recently took a photo of my 13 year old son and he looked weird the person in the picture is not the person i see every day, they say a picture never lies but maybe they do, lets hope so eh!

Take a picture of yourself in a mirror. Does the picture now look like the reflection?

In photos you see yourself the opposite way round to in a mirror. As our faces are not symmetrical we see a 'different' person.

A Mirror reverses the image, left to right.
A photo gives the true image, as others see it.
You can reverse the negative, to print the way a mirror would make it, its reconed women preffer this, photographers often do this to portraits of women!

It's all about lighting. When you're getting your picture taken, the flash caused by the camera or depending where you are, the artificial or natural light that's present will alter the way you look on the photo.

Its one of those funny things. However whats even funnier is if you get a photo of your face and copy half of it in photo shop or paint and then paste it and turn it round and then put the two pieces together - you'll be amazed how funny you look and how unsymmetrical your face is
