for example: age 12 for TV in their room, age 14 for their own cell phone etc.

what about age 10, what would be a good "item" for a 10th birthday privilege?

anything before age 10?

I would not put a TV in a childs room until high school. My daughter got her Nintendo DS at 10 and both my kids got their own "boomboxes" at 8.

As they are able to understand about earning them and the responsibilities involved with the priviledges. Items should also be earned and should be age specific. I personally would never give one of my kids a cell phone unless they had a job. As for a 10 yr old ...mine got a play station.

it all depends upon the child and their maturity level. i wouldn't necessarily associate a privilege with an age because then they will come to expect this whether they are ready or not. plus, their other siblings will also expect the same. i would suggest instead, giving privileges as you feel they are ready to handle such things. also, by trial and error. children should start having privileges when they are 2 & 3 years old. you want them to be able to handle life in a responsible way when they turn 18, so start young. show that you trust them in smaller ways and then they will be ready for bigger things when the time comes.

Not really an item, but the priveledge to stay home alone while mom and dad are running some quick errands. I think 10 is the perfect age to start letting them stay alone for 15 or 20 minutes while mom or dad runs to the post office or grocery store. It's like freedom to them for some reason.

Are you talking under 13? 13+ are not children but adolescence and 17+ are young adults.

I don't think there is any age where having a TV in your room is acceptable. Just seems like a total waste to me.
Generally a persons maturity level should give you a clue as to what types of things they can handle. You should just follow your instincts.
Best of luck!

A tree house. That would have been cool at 10.

Please don't go for video games, kids these days need more education and exercise. Good luck!

i agree with Shannon L and i don't agree with the first answer, you should wait till your child is 13 to let them stay home alone!
for 10 you should let them wait! simply give her or him good book or perhaps ask them what they truly want!
