any foreign object in the mouth will cause drooling. He should get use to it in the next 3-4 days. As for pain for the RPE (rapid palatal expander) a day or so. As soon as the palatal separates he should only feel pressure just after turning the key(s) Do not turn the key more then the doctor recommended. A little over the counter pain med can be helpful.

I've had one, and they don't hurt just randomly like that. It only hurts the first few days of tightening, then it just feels like a pressure on the jaw. Maybe your son is afraid to talk because it does give you a lisp, but only for the first few days.

PALATAL EXPANDERS WORK BY APPLYING PRESSURE TO CERTAIN TEETH - WHICH SUBSEQUENTLY CAUSES THE BONE SURROUNDING THOSE TEETH TO BEGIN EXPANDING.
YOUR SON'S DROOL WILL DECREASE WHEN HE BECOMES ACCUSTOMED TO HAVING THE EXPANDER.
