Hepa = liver, itis = inflammation of, hepatitis is inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis A is one type of disease that causes liver inflammation, scarring, and damage. Hepatitis B & C, etc, are different types of diseases, but the thing they all have in common is that they affect the liver.
I don't know when Hep A was first identified.
