I already have everything I need, since I've had 2 dogs for 9 years and am single. I will tell you the most important items I have are:
1) A crate
2) baby gates
3) kong toys to fill with PB, keeps them occupied!
4) A trusted friend to take care of them while I'm out of town.
Those are the things I couldn't do without!

I have two labs and they are absolutely wonderful... but they are JUST like children...

So... Close doors or buy gates for areas you don't want them wondering to...

They love exercises and will exercise themselves for the most part if you have a big yard... Get an invisible fence...

They chew on everything, so get lots of chew toys.. (raw hides keep them quite busy)

Like Children accidents happen. Paper towels and a carpet cleaner are a godsend.

If you plan on traveling with your dog (or dogs in my case) and you don't mind the gas mileage, A bigger SUV works well for them. They can spread out just like humans do and they don't get cramped and whine. I have a half ton suburban for my girlfriend and I plus two full grown Labs and we travel frequently in comfort and the dogs don't complain. Plus it keeps them busy since they can see everything.

I don't recommend a kennel or a cage... because they will complain and that's annoying. They are not like children in this respect. If you send children to their room they will complain and eventually give up and do something else or fall asleep. Not dogs... they will complain until you let them out or they die.

Always get a ID tag... they will get out... They will almost always come right back (labs do anyway) but if not, your in good shape.

Buy GOOD quality lead ropes AFTER they stop chewing on everything.
