People are saying that the illegal Mexican immigrants (most illegals are Mexican) are religious, conservative Catholics and that's why they have so many children. If that's so, then why don't they leave? After all, they're breaking so many laws (fake ID's jumping the border, lying, etc), and that's against the Church's teaching, too. Hmmm? Aren't their immortal souls in danger?

The immigrants just don’t know that what they are doing could be a sin. If you are ignorant of what you are doing is sinful, then you are not guilty of serious sin. Thus most illegal immigrants cannot be held to be guilty of serious sin according to the understanding of the Catholic Church. Even within the Catholic Church the boundaries are not black and white as to what constitutes sin.

"During the 1984 Synod of Bishops, the Bishops suggested that sins should now be divided into venial, grave and mortal sins to indicate that there is a "sliding scale" of seriousness among sins. The Holy Father addressed this suggestion in his Apostolic Exhortation Reconciliatio et Paenetentia where he said (at no.17):

'But here we come to a further dimension of the mystery of sin, one on which the human mind has never ceased to ponder: the question of its gravity. It is a question which cannot be overlooked and one which the Christian conscience has never refused to answer. Why and to what degree is sin a serious matter in the offense it commits against God and in its effects on man? The church has a teaching on this matter which she reaffirms in its essential elements, while recognizing that (it) is not always easy in concrete situations to define clear and exact limits.' "

In determining whether illegal immigrants in the USA are sinning by being here is very hard to say. I think that it is a personal decision that each immigrant has to determine for themselves, yet they should be presented with the question, in order to examine it. One of the acts of mercy is to counsel one’s brother in the truth, and we should all be doing that for one another in love.

400,000 illegal aliens did not show up for court dates for their immigration hearings. Which made them “Absconders”, that is a Crime! Instead they just thumbed their noses at the American Court System and made a mockery of our laws! That’s a Crime!

If any American tried breaking any of these laws, they would find themselves in prison and have a huge fine to pay. Just using someone else’s social security card is a felony and punishable by 5 years in prison and a fine up to $ 250,000.00!

That is a good point, but then on the other hand, are there many religious people out there who have not at one time or another gone against what they believed? And I'm betting if they have the action was not one that would improve the quality of life for him and his whole extended family. It was more likely some self gratifying action. Just a thought.

It's wrong to break the law, according to the Bible. Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's. That says: pay your taxes. They are not paying, because they make $$ under the table. It's wrong and against the Catholic church's teachings to lie. That's obvious: fake IDs, no documentation, breaking the law. Seems simple to me. Sin is sin, IMHO. C'mon, be honest and stop the bleeding hearts.

How about the golden rule, treat others like you would like to be treated. I don't think you would like to be called illegal, and be discriminated against. All you guys are saying they are sinning, but where does it say that you must follow man's laws. I doubt anyone has claimed Godsaid thou shall not cross the border illegaly.

I sometimes wonder why they want to come to this country when people like you make such comments
They want a better life.
Their problem is the country MEXICO.
Yes, they need to immigrate legally.
But when you make an illegal U-turn are you sinning?

The Catholic church is for amnesty for all illegals everywhere. I guess that means they don't see illegal immigration as a big problem for the invaded lands and don't see it as much of a sin, if at all.

I think that it is so important to them to get to the "land of the free" that the christian side takes a back seat to the well being of their families. If they want to come over, go ahead just do it legally. I respect someone more for their honesty than lying and running through the desert to get here.

As a childhood catholic, I can attest to the fact that many adult catholics do not have the ability to analytically think.

Catholicism is by definition, asking the priest/pope etc to do your thinking for you. Cathlolics are never told to think for themselfs. They are only told what the church wants them to believe.
