My 21 month old son throws his food on the floor, we tried ignoring it when he was younger now we make him get down and throw it in the trash but he just thinks it's a game. I need some ideas on how to get him to stop all together. (I'm not going to spank him or anything.)

When he does, just take away the food and let him sit there. When he picks it up, make sure he also cleans the floor. Then let him know that he won't get his favorite foods. Or you can take him out of chair and put him in his bed.

On a different note, which you say you won't try:

Granted, a swift smack on the back of the hand is quite efficient. Not hard, just enough to startle. Their little feelings get hurt very easily at that age. Good spankings aren't about how much you can hurt the child, just to see if you can get their attention.

Remember, at that age, punishment needs to happen immediately. Any wait in punishment, the child doesn't know why he's being punished. So no matter what you do, it needs to happen basically as the dish hits the floor.

Good luck!

well since you dont believe in spanking i would go with this instead (cause he is too young to understand what time out is about or taking a toy is all about) tell him if he throws another piece of food he gets no candy or sweets unless he picks up his food that he threw and throws it away and finishes the rest of his lunch or what ever.if that doesnt work then tell him "no outside or bye bye" until you stop throwing food.(both of those works on my 3 and a half yr old)

TIME OUT?? I dont know, I am a firm believer in the Holy Bible and it says spare the rod, spoil the child. If my son threw food, I would spank him for it. If that dont work, he gets time out. One minute for year of age. Like yours would need to sit down for 1 mintue and 30 seconds. I couldnt make mine sit down either, so I would bring the car seat in the house, set him down in it for 2 minutes and then let him up after his punishment was over. May sound harsh, but I have have a million moms tell me that was the best advise they ever got.

You just need to be persistant. Making him pick up the mess is great. Be sure you don't giggle or smile when he does something naughty or he will continue to think it's a game. Keep a stern voice so he knows you mean business. Best of luck!

That is going to be a hard one to break, but the best thing that you can do is make him pick it up, say no very sternly, and be extremely serious. Perhaps he will pick up on the fact that you are not happy with his actions. The best way to stop behavior like this is to correct it right when it happens. Best of luck to both of you.

Take the food away. When he starts throwing it, take it off him. Don't give him "snacks" between meals. If hes hungry, he will be much more interested in eating his food than throwing it. You may also be giving him too much food at each meal.

What do you do when a pet shiiites on the floor? That's right!! Rub his face in it and then make him eat it. I did this with my pets and my children. Only had to do it once.
