We are trying to pay back a check that didn’t clear our bank due to financial difficulties. My husband is in the army and deployed and we had some problems financially. It is not right that anyone could get your phone number. My concern is that this check writing collection agency somehow got our non published phone number and cell phone number and I have no idea how they could retrieve this information since they never had it the first place. This is a new number. I feel that confidentiality has been broken and I just would like to know how they go about getting our cell phone numbers and home number when they never had it to begin with. How do they do this and what should I do? Please help.

Whoever you wrote the check to probably had it then turned it over.

More than likely your number was given to them by the person that you bounced the check with. If not from them, then the collection agency could have simply called the phone company and been issued the number. Unlisted numbers are only unavailable to the general public, private companies can have this information on need to know basis by law.

If they call your cell phone, I would ask them not to call that number andonly use the home phone number because it costs you money everytime they call the cell number. If you are polite about it they should honor that request

An unlisted number means it is not made available in directories for the general public (i.e., the ones they pass out from door to door). However, for businesses that need to locate people, there are services that will provide these numbers. Nothing illicit or illegal about it, and it doesn't mean the phone company has done anything wrong by turning over your phone number to EVERYONE, either.
