Crisco makes a good Vegtable shortening. I am not vegan, but my wife is, that's how I know.

When ever I have a recipe that calls for shortening I substitute cooking oil in its place. Everything has always turned out well
I never buy shortening because it goes rancid before I get to put it to use. I always use cooking oil.
Good Luck with your pie!

If you avoid dairy, then use margerine, very cold. Butter would work best, again very cold, but I don't know if you would eat it.
Also, a little tip, make sure the water used in the pastry is ice cold. The colder the shortning and water, the flakier the crust. And try not to overknead/mix. Again, the outcome will be flakier if you don't beat it up!

Don't use CRISCO or other shortening b/c it has trans fats- BAD 4 U!!! I get palm oil (it's solid like shortening) at the health food store and it works great! There's also oil pie crust recipes...

Canola oil. If the recipe calls for 1 cup shortening, use 3/4 c. oil, for example. Hope it's yummy! :)
