I have a 5 month old yorkie. I noticed a nickel size lump right below her shoulder area. It wasn't there yesterday, so I don't think it's a tumor, there's no way I wouldn't have noticed it. She is eating, sleeping and acting normal. The lump itself seems to be under the skin and isn't scaby or anything like that, doesn't seem to hurt her. If it is just a bite, how long before it goes away? Or, how long should I give it before I start to panic and think it's something else? Like I said, it wasn't there last night, so I really don't think it's a tumor. (I don't think they grow instantly overnight) Any thoughts???
Should I take her to the vet tomorrow if it's still there and the same size?

Look at the bite area and see if you find any puncture wounds that would indicate a bite (spider, wasp, bee...)

If there is only swelling and no redness or "heat", and it doesn't seem to itch, it's probably NOT a bite.

It could be a cyst or a tumor... and, yes, some tumors are very aggressive and show up "overnight".

Don't panic, but do get your dog to a vet. The vet can "aspirate" the lump to find out what's inside of it, and can tell you if it needs to be treated or not.

phone your vet clinic, and find out what the dosage for diphenhydramine for your dog is. you can buy it as 'benadryl' in your local pharmacy. If it is a spider bite or something, then the antihistamine should clear it up. We had a similar thing happen to our dog because of a beesting.

if it's NOT a spider bite, the course of meds is a fairly cheap and unintrusive way to find out, and you can still take the dog to the vet later.

Best of luck!

i would watch it throughout the rest of the week and if by next friday it doesnt get smaller(or start to heal) or if it gets big then take her to the vet. there is no need to panic at all, it is probably just a bite adn will most likely go away.

definitely take her to the vet if it is still there for a couple of days. also check to make sure she is not running a fever or throwing up. some spider (black widow) bites can be dangerous to small dogs.
