I work the switchboard so I just transfer. No time to screen the call. We get about 700 calls a day.

If it's a switchboard situation, then just transfer the call. There's not time to contact each and every recipient. If someone for whom you are transferring is expecting a call that they would like dealt with in a particular way, then that individual should let the switchboard operator know.

However, if you have had business with a customer, and they ask to speak with someone else (a supervisor, or someone in another department), as a matter of good service to the customer you should contact the other person to see if the other person is available, rather than just forwarding the call. For example, if they will need another number to reach the person they are being transferred to, you can come back to the line and tell them the person's direct number and then give them the option to be transferred to voicemail.

Generally you contact the person you're transferring to to see if they can take the call. Alot of time people are trying to avoide some calls and if you just transfer it could put you in the hot seat

You should call the person first to see if they are available to take the call and then transfer or take a message.

I just transfer them. But if you are an administrative assistant to a specific person or group of people, you may want to find out what their preference is.

You should transfer the call, if they are trying to avoid someone then they should tell you up front not to put through the calls from so and so otherwise unless you are their personal secretary you should not have to screen calls for your co-workers.

It is more polite to announce the caller to the person who is to receive the call prior to transferring the call. Sometimes the person who is receiving the call will opt for you to take a message or put the caller into their voice mail.
