I have a heated indoor and outdoor area for him, he seems happy but wonder if another dog would be good for him.

Company will be good for him in the long run. Dogs that are isolated for long periods of time often become fearful of new situations / animals/ people, or can become very aggressive.

If you get another dog, STAY HOME for at least a long weekend to help introduce your dog to the new dog and to help the new dog settle in.

Hi a dog sitter would be more apt as leaving a dog 12 hours a day seems hardly fair on one dog but to want to have 2 & leave them 12 hours a day seems a waste of 2 dogs that could be out enjoying life with someone that will have the time they really need to have spent with them...
You seem to have barely the time for one...Regards Jake

it is not necessary to get another dog. just make sure he has plenty of toys to keep him busy if he is not sleeping. Then when you get home, take him for a long long walk. Bassets need to exercise to work off excess energy built up all day.

Id ask a breeder but i think if the basset likes a dog that you bring home then yes keep it but make sure its around the same size.

I had a basset hound, and he absolutely loved other dogs. Any breed, large or small, will make a great buddy for him!

yes another dog would be good for him but nothing too small as he is a rather good size dog. Maybe a jack russell or something wirey to keep up with him.

i think that is a great idea. dogs(no matter what breed) need attentino adn if you cant be there to give it to him, getting another dog could be good for him. i would suggest adopting a dog though, this way you can find one that is potty trained(since you probably wouldnt have time for that burden) adn one that is compatable with your dog
