Mine was hit by cars 7 times. I figure he has 2 left. I wasn't fun living next to a highway.

One theory on the origin of this expression is that in ancient times nine was a lucky number because it is the Trinity of Trinities. As cats seem able to escape injury time and time again, this lucky number seemed suited to the cat. While in most countries the cat is said to have nine lives, in Arab and Turkish proverbs poor puss has a mere seven lucky lives and in Russia, is said to-survive nine deaths.

A long time ago in the 1340's- a man named Brockmanishbanogen ( in french it is pronounced Brockenshish) (it is a french name) made up words, sayings, and he wrote palets- which is a book- (pronounced palays) and he had a cat named Googutremannbot (which in french they pronounced it Goog- ut- muh- bot) He was known to have nine lifes because the cat always got hurt- Brockmanishbanogen beleived that everytime his cat got hurt- he died! So he cat always got hurt and the last time- the ninth time- He actually died- so Brockmanishbanogen thought that cats were known to have nine lifes. He posted it everywhere- and apparently... the story is still here to say- Cats don't really have nine lifes

I heard it was from the "cat o' nine tails" the whip used to punish sailors of old.
It was a leather whip with nine strands at the end, each with a metal scraper or tip to shred the flesh.
You could lose up to eight of these during the lashing, and still be able to carry on - hence nine lives.

Not positive but think it comes from the lash they used to whip people with at sea. Had 9 strands and was called the cat.

I believe that this is an old English-American saying. "A cat has nine lives". "For three he plays, for three he strays, and for the last three, he stays."

I think it has to do with cats being able to get out of situations real quick. Hope that makes sense.

Perhaps its to do with them being very adventurous. Don't know where the saying comes from though.
