Adam died. He ceased to exist. He returned to the ground from where he was taken.
GENESIS 3:19--"in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."
Actually Adam and Eve did go to the Bible "hell."
Hell is mankinds common grave. All people, good and bad go to hell where they sleep in death until the resurrection occurs.
There are many Scriptures that show that hell is where the dead are buried and also that soon hell will be put out of existance, along with death itself--without death, there will be no need for hell.
God is love and tortures no one---Adam & Eve lost out on the hope of living forever as God's perfect children. Death, with no hope to live again was their punishment.

Genesis 2:17 shows how Adam would die, no indication is given that he would be further punished in a fiery hell. Genesis 3:19 gives further details. This verse shows that he was made from the dust of the ground and when he died, he would return to the dust. Ecclesiastes 9 v5,10 shows that Adam, Eve and all their descendants essentially lose consciousness and cease to exist when death comes.
Reading John chapter 11 about the resurrection of Lazarus is very encouraging and it show that the resurrection is a hope held out to all who have died or are dying. Revelation 21 v4 shows that death Will be ended, the only way this can happen is if all who have died because of sin get resurrected. The Earth is the place for this resurrection to take place. (Psalm 37 v11) Ask Jehovah's Witnesses for further details if you need them.

Adam basically returned to dust. He didn't go to hell or anything. But God punished him by introducing sin and death into the human family. And that's also the answer to why people die today.
But Jesus Christ sacrificed himself for our salvation and everyone who obeys God's commands will be able to attain perfectionism in a "cleansed' earth in the near future along with no death, no sickness e.t.c. Those who have already died have already paid off their sins and thus are judged based on their past actions on whether or not they will be resurrected to a perfect body on this new world (which is the Earth, except cleaned out of all the wickedness that exists today). Thus, for instance, Adam would not be resurrected because he already had that opportunity, the same for Eve. People like Hitler, and other really bad people may not attain perfection as well.

In Genesis, the deal was such that Adam and Eve would live in paradise, as well as their descendants, if they followed the laws of God. If they disobeyed, then " they would die."
So Adam and Eve disobeyed. They did not die immediately. But they lost out on paradise and would have to work hard for their survival. They eventually aged, grew old (about 900 years) and finally died. There descendants would pay the same price up to this day.
So the same price was death. God did'nt say "hell" or "purgatory." Just death. Other scriptures show death to be a non-existent state....no memories, no feelings, no idea of the passage of time. Kind of like a deep sleep from anestesia.

Adam and Eve were punished by being kicked out of The Garden of Eden. And with the loss of their immortal life on Earth. They were seperated from direct contact with God which they had enjoyed prior too their disobedience... The did live several hundred years in mortal flesh. We are not told of what happened to them at the end of Their mortal existance... They were given The Way to be able to return to God and there is some indication that they did follow The Way... If they did then they are in Heaven now.
All who ended mortal existance, before Christ went to The Cross, went to paradise. There they waited for Christ to come and take them to heaven. Which He did when He left His mortal body on The Cross.

They don't have a story on where he went after he died but we can guess from his story that he went to heaven because He was saved... But the punishment that God gave Adam for disobeying was "he will work the grounds and the grounds are not going to be productive. He said that we all shall die because of his disobedience.."

His punishment was that he had to work really hard with the land, instead of hanging out and having fun all day. Also he and Eve had to go live to the east of Eden. Seems like pretty harsh punishment for having a bit of fruit.
According to the Bible, Adam finally died at the age of 930 years, the traditional Jewish view being that he and Eve are currently buried in the Cave of Machpelah, in Hebron.

Adam received punishment for his disobedience - so did Eve (banishment from the garden, working the earth, pain in child birth etc) one can reason the parents taught the children to be obedient to God because we read they brought offerings for the Lord...(Cain showed irreverence by withholding the best fruits)
They went to sheol when they died - Jesus's sacrifice set the captives free.

I don't know, but here are the theories that pop into my head:
1) He went to Hell, for disobeying God. However, God had already punished Adam. Would God add further punishment?
2) He went to Purgutory. As he needed redeaming, but the redeamer would not come for another 6 thousand years (or so), he would wait there until Christ came to forgive all sins.
3) He went to Heaven, having asked God for forgiveness at some point in his life. This may not have been recorded, but still may have happened.
I tend to think the answer is #2, but cannot back it up scripturally.
