I'd like to have gastric bypass surgery but am very very nervous. My mother had it and was hospitalized for a month. A coworker had it done however and was back at work in 4 days. She's on vacation so I havent been able to find out why her's was done so quickly. Does anyone know?

Also I'm wondering is it possible that she had a differnet type of surgery? What type of gastric bypass surgeries have the fastest recovery time?

If she was back at work that fast then she had a lap band procedure and not the gastric bypass. Bypass surgery is major surgery and very risky. Some people have died from it. The lap band is much safer and it is reversible. Please consider your options.

Weight loss surgery-like gastric bypass /lap band surgery / stomach stapling and gastrectomy have become very common and very safe now. My cousin got her Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in India. She has lost more than 65 lbs in 5 months and is very happy with the results. The price for obesity surgery is very less in India. My cousin just paid 25% of the cost she was quoted in America. She got her surgery from a company called Forerunners Healthcare.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your Obesity surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.

I would seriously reconsider having that type of surgery. The death rate is 1 in 200. Very serious complications can occur. A co-worker of my sister had this happen after 6 months, within a year she was dead at 38y/o.
If you feel you must have it done, consider the less invasive stomach banding procedure.

It could depend on many different things, it could be age, general health, complications, etc. Also, studies have shown that nurses who give their patients more pain meds (or not withhold them) have patients who recover a lot quicker than those who don't give enough pain meds.
