Kennel Cough is a bacterial infection that settles into the airway and lungs.

IT IS HIGHLY CONTAGEOUS and can be passed from dog to dog through the air (no direct contact is needed).

You should have your dog vaccinated (it's called a "Bordatella" shot) before allowing it to play with any other dogs.

If your dog gets kennel cough, the disease usually takes about 10-14 days to run its course. The classic symptom is a dry hacking cough (usually after the dog has been running or is excited). Your vet may give the dog antibiotics to keep any opportune viruses from attacking your dog's respiratory system, but the antibiotics do NOT affect the kennel cough directly (because it's caused by bacteria, not by a virus). Cough suppressants, like children's Robitussen, can help curb the cough.

absolutley. Kennel cough is very contagious. your dog can catch it by playing with an infected dog, but be aware, it can hang out in a dog heavy enviroment such as a dog park, boarding facility or even petsmart. Kennel cough is often caused by bacteria that lives in dog heavy areas and is essentially a doggy cold. symptoms include a hacking cough, runny nose, eye discharge and lethargy. It is generally not something to fret about but if you do see these symptoms in your dog get to the vet. They can give you antibiotics and cough suppressants. If left untreated it can become much worse, possibly pnemonia.

Kennel Cough got its name because it is a contagious disease that spreads where dogs are concentrated. In most cases, this occurs when dogs are boarded in a kennel. It can be treated with antibiotics, but, even with treatment, it can be fatal.

The good news is that there is a vaccination to prevent it, called Bordatella, and any reputable kennel owner will insist that all dogs being kept at that kennel are vaccinated.
