Because we're the most dangerous disproof of religion -- we can live happy, healthy, productive lives without gods and goddesses, so the priests and ministers and shamans aren't entirely too happy with us. We're living proof that there's an alternative to 'goddidit'. Our very existence throws their religions into doubt.

Why are Christians persecuted to the point of being killed in very painful ways and could get out of it by simply denying Jesus??
I myself am unaware of any state sponcered persecution of Atheists and if there is I would like to know cuz I think often atheists are a national treasure who lack only one small decision b4 they become a truly effective tool against evil.

Partly for the same reason any minority is; people tend to fear and dislike those who are different.
There is a common misconception that religion is the only source of morality, and therefore atheists must be immoral, bad people.

Because religious folks feel that it's impossible to be honest good people without the gift of heaven and the fear of hell...which is kinda scary. How are all those Christians going to be if they all realize there is no God? Mass suicide to "prove otherwise", meaning escape the "I told you so,"?

I honestly wish I knew. Sometimes I feel like we're being denied our basic humanity because of our beliefs. It's unfair, really. I don't discount others out of hand or deny their basic humanity simply because of their beliefs - I'm here to understand why people think they way they do.

Here is some food for thought; is the continued attack on those professing Christianity a release valve for those who profess to being atheistic. They wonder (way back in their mind) if they are doomed if they eventually find out they are wrong in their belief. Anyone who is constantly in an attack mode, is psychologically covering up a fear.. It makes them feel better by knocking someone else down.. Thereby gaining them a pseudo sense of security..

Come to the UK-atheism is totally dominant. Christians here are totally subdued and the great thing is it happened as part of a natural process. No one made Christians reject their faith they just made a choice to do it.

Because those who cling to their religions and are useing them as a crutch, see us running free and are afraid of where we're running to. They are afraid of science and technology just the same way. I'm happy to be rejected by them, it is a compliment.
