A sixteen month old usually sleeps about 10-12 hours a night and naps probably 2 hours per day. With that being said. EVERY CHILD IS DIFFERENT!! This is a very tough time for development in that many, many babies at this age are NOT sleeping through the night and this is perfectly normal!!! They are experiencing growing pains, teething, and other new social understandings that can awaken a baby in the night. Try to be patient and remember that what works for you and your baby is ALWAYS the right thing. And also remember that EVERY baby will someday sleep through the night and some will always nap and some may stop all together. Some babies thrive on a strict schedule and some do not. Try to be in tune with the needs of your special and unique child. His/Her needs will vary from others.

A 16-month old baby should already be on a schedule and sleep through the night. Depending on your schedule, most babies at 16-months get up with the parents in the morning and take a nap right after their lunch...for at least an hour or up to two hours. Letting them sleep too long for naps creates difficulty getting them to sleep at night. Doctors and studies say children should get at least 12 hours of sleep each night.
Consistency is the key. You should keep the baby on the same schedule every day, including weekends. It is not only good for the baby, but it allows you your own time to accomplish the things you are unable to do while you are tending to your baby. It's a win/win situation.

My daughter is cutting teeth and we notice she gets up in the middle of the night now when she's in pain. Nothing a few teething tabs before bed hasn't fixed though.
My daughter sleeps about 10 hours at night, has a short morning nap and a two hours afternoon nap if I'm lucky! This is the age where they try to transition and stay awake longer for fear they will miss something while they're sleeping.
If you're having trouble, the best thing to do is stay consistent and make a routine. As hard as it may be, stick to it! Have a ritual at bed time and nap time such as kissing all the stuffed bears "night night" and laying down to the same sounds every day. My daughter sleeps best to the hum of a humidifier or fan. Read a book every night before bed. (Just a few ideas)
Studies also show that kids who take regular naps during the day sleep better at night.

My son is 17 months, but has been sleeping the same for months - he goes to bed at 8:00 at night, wakes up around 8:30 in the morning, and takes a nap from 12:00 noon until about 2-2:30pm.

my daughter is 20 months but she's been always like this since 4 months, she'll sleep at 12:30 wake up at 4 no-matter how much she whines i don't pick her so she falls back to sleep just in case she gets up in between
at night she sleeps around 9:30 and gets up by 8:30.
i think like everybody else i would too suggest you to make a routine, when you put your kid to bed make the baby hold something like a teddy or anything he likes.
play some lullabies like make two Cd's one for the night one for the day they love it and they do understand its night time lullaby and afternoon lullaby
before putting baby to bed give them half a cup of warm milk it really helps.
hope this helps

10 hrs at night with 2-3 hrs of naps (either a long mid day nap or 2 short naps, one in the am and one in the afternoon.)
