How about one of those little wooden baby walkers that has number and alphabet blocks in it that he can push along? We bought my daughter one of these for her first birthday (she's now 4) and it's been one of those toys that she's just played and played with. At 1 she would hold the handle and totter along behind it. Then she would build with the blocks. At 3, it was mostly used to push her baby doll along in, although quite often she would sit in it and get us to push her along. Now that she's 4 she's paying more attention to the numbers and letters on the blocks. The one we have is the Pintoy one which you can see on Mail Order Express at http://www.mailorderexpress.com/shop2/results.asp?ext=john
Or failing that, what about a classic book eg Thomas the Tank Engine Treasury/Pooh Bear Treasury etc that she could write in to mark the occasion. Amazon stock both of these and if your mother in law wanted to print off a book plate to stick in the front, she should visit http://www.myhomelibrary.org/bookplates.html

Books! make all the toy suggestions you want but most people don't care. We asked for books and clothes instead of toys. This way we could pick out the good educational toys. IF you mother in law is smart enough to pick from what you choose, go to a website like www.amazon.com or www.kbtoys.com and make a wish list for your son. From those two sites your mother in law can buy a gift and most items can be gift wrapped and sent right to your child!
Good luck and congrats on making it through the first year!

My daughter got a sand box for her first birthday and LOVES it. She's 17 months old and still plays in it nonstop.
She also received different sized and clolored balls. She loves balls so much. She can kick, throw, and rarely catches. She also says ball all the time.

A savings bond or start an education IRA or savings account. Then every year on his birthday she can add to it, even if it's only $20. Every cent helps and it will in turn really help him out one day.

A digital photo frame and a memory card for it. Fill the memory card with pictures of family, baby, etc for an enduring gift.

Depending on how you get on with your mother in law, go shopping with her and your son and you can all choose together. if not let her go with him to choose.
Remember his first birthday is special and he wont rember it so maybe something he can cherish forever.
