My friend is due to have her first baby any day. Her mother has been dating her boyfriend for 1 year, she wants her boyfriend to be called "grandpa" by the baby and family.

My friend and her husband do not want this guy to be called the grandpa of their child. They are not close with him and feel uncomfortable with the idea, especially since they only knew him a month when she got pregnant and he is not married into the family.

My friend's mother says she plans to marry her boyfriend in the next 6 months so they need to get use to the idea of him being the baby's grandpa. My friend's father (who would be the biological grandpa) is dead.

Do you think my friend should just let the guy be called grandpa?

Nope.........none of my kids call my step-mom grandma b/c she isn't. He can have some other sort of name like poppy.

If she's not comfortable with it don't do it then. She is the mother and if her mom and her mom's b-friend can't respect that then she shouldn't leave baby alone with them or even bring baby around very often. Maybe she could try to make a compromise by having baby call him uncle or if she doesn't like that then his real name will have to be good enough. She is in charge and in control. Especially if her hubby agrees with her. Don't let her mom and her moms b-friend bully her into doing something she's not comfortable with. God Bless!

i think thats the correct term for it

if he is her stepdad, so he'll be grandpa to the baby.

unless he has done something bad to make them distrust him, why not give him the benefit of the doubt?

here's an idea.. since the baby won't be saying anything soon.. perhaps you could use that as a trial period for this man to prove himself to the family.

you have to consider that the mother also deserves her happiness. her husband has passed away and she also needs someone. your friend should also think of her mother.

I think she should do what she feels most comfortable with...if she doesn't want her kid to call him "grandpa" then so be it...they should have enough respect for her to honor her decision...if they don't then its their problem....they may get mad but they'll get over it...
