They are the same. They both go to school for the same thing, except doctors can perfom surgeries, and deliver babies both in clinics and hospitals.

A doctor is an academic title give to someone by a institution of higher learning.

To be a doctor you need to compete a college degree at a level that is called a doctorate. This is an advance level and the requirements to complete it depend on the specific program. At the very least you need to complete an bachelors level degree and then complete the specific program requirements. You can get a doctorate degree in just about any academic field. From education to business even nursing.

An MD is a specific doctorate degree that allows to work in the profession everyone calls doctor. The requirements to complete in the US can change from state to state but basically you need to complete a bachelors level degree and the course work needs to involve alot of science. You then take an entrance exam call the MCAT. This score along with all your grades for all college work and fee are part of the application process to enter an MD program. If you are chosen for admission you must then complete 2 years of classroom work and 2 years of clinical (working with real patients) work. If you complete all of that and your scores are enough you will be given an MD degree.

However, in order to actually work as a doctor you to now complete more training in a specialty area of medicine and the time and requirements to complete this training depending on what specialty area you choose.

Someone that is a Doctor as in Dr. is someone that has obtained a Ph.D degree in any subject. Like math or english if you have obtained a Ph.D in those subjects you are considered a doctor of Math and Science.

However a M.D. is a medical doctor. Someone that when to medical school to become a doctor. They are a M.D. not a PH.D.

An MD is someone, qualified by studying at medical school (after their first college degree) plus registration, to be a medical doctor.
You are entitiled to be called "Dr" if you have a PhD - this is a 3 or 4 year post graduate degree in any subject (so you could be a doctor of english literature for example).
In the UK medicine is not a post graduate degree - it a five year course leading to bachelor degrees in medicine & surgery but you are given the courtesy title of "doctor". Dentistry is similar, but UK dentists are not called "doctor".
In Germay, any graduate of university was entitled to be addressed as "doctor" but I believe this may have changed...
In essence an MD is the kind of doctor legally allowed to perform physical medicine - being called doctor doesn't mean you are an MD!

A doctor is anyone with a doctoral degree--PhD, Psy.D.,Doctor of Divinity, M.D., D.O.. The word doctor is also used interchangeable with physician/medical doctor. All physicians are doctors, but not all doctors are physicians. A doctorate degree is just the highest degree in any particular field. A doctorate in physics (that is, a PhD in physics) is just the highest degree in physics. We could call Einstein Dr. Einstein because he has a PhD in physics. Medical doctors have M.D., D.O., and some also have PhD in addition to their M.D..

An MD is a degree given to graduates of a medical school, i.e., a "Doctorate of Medicine." Medical school is usually 4 yrs.

To actually be a doctor, you need to be licensed by the state and to get the license, you need to have completed a residency program, ala the doctors on the TV show "ER." The minimum residency is three years for a "specialty" such as Family Practice. In California, completion of 2 yrs of residency allows you to get a license as a "General Practioner," i.e., someone who is neither Board eligible nor certified. A surgeon generally must complete 7 yrs of residency, as a minimum.

"Doctors" have PhD, OD, DDS, ED, DDiv, and
DO degrees. They are, in order, doctorate of philosophy, doctor of optometry, doctor of dental science, doctor of education, doctor of divinity, and doctor of osteopathy. These are all academic degrees, and the OD, DDS, DO degrees also are medical specialties who are licensed by the state they work in.
A medical doctor (M.D.) is a 4-year college graduate (B.A. or B.S.) and then a graduate of an accredited medical college. The graduate then does a residency, a specialty, undergoes thorough testing, testing, licensing, and peer review.
