I often get put in the position of where someone says "I love you" to me, and i dont know how to respond. These are nice people who are friends of mine, but i don't feel we are at the level of "I lvoe you". I feel very akward and have given in and said i love you, too in the past, and i have also just said thank you, or something neutral. it seems like they throw out i love yous like hellos. what do i do?

They have love for you - I understand that, because I have (for some odd reason) a huge amount of love for lots of people. I even actually loved my boss that I couldn't stand!! Isn't that weird? I mean, she was awful, and I couldn't help it. I didn't respect her (I didn't disrespect her, either), and I didn't like her, but I loved her. Granted, I never said to her that I loved her, and I don't think I would ever go up to someone that I wasn't very close with and tell them that. Some may throw out "I love you" like hello, but I don't think that would be too common. If someone says they love you, you can pretty much rest assured that they DO love you. It's a warm fuzzy - be happy! Just smile a genuine smile and look right into their eyes when you do, and say thank you.

It happens because people get into a groove when they are at church and it is just a way they express their feelings.
It is just like someone asking "How are you?" It doesn't mean they literally want to know every detail about how you are. It is just a thing people say.
The "I love you" thing may make you feel uncomfortable, especially when it is someone you hardly know, but you have to understand where they are mentally when they say it.
You don't have to say it back to them if you aren't comfortable with it. Just smile, forget it, and move on.

I have actually learned to say "I love you" a lot more in the past few years than I did before. In this situation, I'd say that there's nothing wrong with them saying it to you, especially because they might actually love you. If you don't feel like you want to tell them you love them, that's all right. Whatever you feel shouldn't change the way they feel about you.

It is because they are taught to love and the church is the only place besides anywhere else in the world on where they will mention this to strangers. The bible tells those that believe to love one another and to show love. I think it is not like a romantic or intimate love, but a love in Christ.

O.K....

What they are saying is TRUE! they do love you!
Because they see someone, who has chosen to be in church, with them....instead of doing something else.
They look at you...as a sister! or if male a brother.

When people are born again...a LOVE comes into them, (not all can express it)..but! most can.
It has happened to me...and to this very day, still does.

One has a joy! to be with others who love Jesus...in the church.
It is not the love we have sooo very close to our family, or friends...but a love in the Lord Jesus...and we look at each other
as part of that church family....What a joy! to see you there.

They are probably saying it in the global sense, ans they love all humans because God instructs them to do so. Some people are just blessed to be full of love for others and they go ahead and spread it around.

You can say things like - you are very kind, I appreciate that or just simply say thank you as you have been doing. All the best.

if you are uncomfortable with it, you need to set boundaries so people don't cross them. if they love you, they will respect them. simply tell them you appreciate what they are saying, but at the same time it makes you uncomfortable.

if they don't take a hint, do what i do and go for the more blunt approach. i usually don't have any trouble expressing myself. it's not always polite, but it works.

I would feel very uncomfortable saying "I love you" to anyone that I don't love. If someone says that to me, such as at church, I would simply smile at them and say thank you.
