Madison Avenue tells us that people tend to accept most readily messages that confirm what they already believe. Secondly, beliefs and facts are two different things. Having a belief, does not constitute knowing a fact. The two are not synonymous.

Many people of faith, for our purposes here faith is defined as the blind adherence to a belief regardless of a lack of supporting evidence, seem to be disturbed in the face of facts that dispute their beliefs.

Take for example stories about the creation of humans and the Earth. Scientific evidence, not available when the early creation stories were written, (I'm not singling out the Bible here, I'm including all creation stories of early origins) disputes these stories and reveals them for what they are, early peoples attempts to make sense of how the earth and humans came to exist. There are, however, many people who have faith in these stories. They are following exactly on the path predicted by Madison Avenue, rejecting messages that cause dissonance with their held beliefs.

People who base their spiritual position on facts, are equally subject to the laws of Madison Avenue. They, however, can be swayed given a sufficient body of evidence (compiled and provable facts). What frustrates and mobilizes them is what they see as a rejection of logic and an abandonment of reason by "people of faith." Using beliefs as though they were facts is a habit of "people of faith" that is particularly frustrating for factual thinkers.

Frustration leads to aggressiveness, if in a conversation the believer has all the good arguments (and someone with enough culture just might) you will see the disbeliever getting more and more frustrated and dropping the subject or getting upset.
Actually it happens regardless of the subject, you could say that we like to win the arguments. :)

The problem with religion is that a good defense requires a lot of thesis that are long and hard to explain, and most people are simply not into theology, while the atheist can always fall back to come pretty common knowledge like evolution, physics biology and chemistry at a K12 level to remark the "absence" of the hand of god in everyday life.

In short, arguments against religion are plenty, specially counting the history of most organized religions (or churches) and arguments for it tend to be abstract and arcane.

Thus the apparent aggression of believers when questioned. But, as other respondents have pointed out, if they are sure of their beliefs and in possession of good arguments, they may at worst, discard the opposing arguments.

I believe that those who get upset are more concerned about being right than anything. They hate it when anyone has the notion that they could be wrong. And if one notices, the subject doesn't even have to be on religion, it could be on anything, and you'll see the same results.

Those who don't get upset aren't consumed with being right. They're happy where they are spiritually and even if they do not agree with those who challenge them, they understand that other people have the right to speak their mind.

Also those who are consumed with being right seem to have a controlling personality. They like to feel superior with whatever their beliefs are, and look down on those who don't feel the same.

I don't get upset when someone attempts to challenge my belief in God, because I can supply the proof of what and why I believe in God. Against the challenger, who can't supply proof to the why they don't believe. All the challenger have is the empty words that would come out of their mouth, which is not founded to be grounded, can't be proven, nor documented and definitely not infallible. My belief is grounded, sound, based, been proven and founded on documented infallible proof, which is the word of God the Holy Bible.

I'll leave you with one of my motto's to live and die by:

The Word of God said it.....I believe it ......and that settles it!!!!

This is a very good question.

I think it is when people are not secure in their beliefs that they become upset.

I may not like what someone says but that is their opinion and the same God they question or deny is the one who gave us all freedom of choice to accept or deny Him.

There is no need to be angry if someone disagrees with my beliefs.

We have far too little tolerance for others even if we do not see eye-to-eye. We are the same on the inside, all of us, even though we refuse to accept this fact.

I think it's human nature. In a way it's like your child. You would do anything to protect your child. So I think a lot of ppl view their beliefs that way. That and ppl dont like to hear that they are wrong. Most ppl go on the defense, and stop listening once attacked. It's a communication barrier. Until ppl can learn to speak without offending, then ppl will continue to get upset.

i'm no longer religious, yet I do have heavy sociological / anthropological background. in case you experience the ought to "worry" your God, then it incredibly is considering the fact which you experience to blame for some thing, or you opt to experience victimized. maximum persons do no longer worry their God. They love their God. God is incredibly like the wonderful chief. As Machiavelli pronounced, a sturdy chief could desire to be the two enjoyed and feared. If he's in basic terms enjoyed, then people will nevertheless do what they want against his needs at situations. If he's in basic terms feared, then they gained't love their very own lives, in basic terms doing what he needs out of worry of ramifications. in the event that they love and worry him, then they'll do what he needs out of love and admire first, and out of worry 2d. permit me attempt to apply a distinctive analogy for God... God, in maximum peoples' eyes, is nearly a sturdy discern. a sturdy discern makes use of two factors love and a million area discipline to make particular people lead a sturdy existence. a million area love is unconditional. God loves you unconditionally, considering the fact which you're his creation. (in basic terms as a discern loves their new child unconditionally). a million area love is for effective reinforcement. God shows you opt to reward your sturdy habit. it is what maximum persons call "advantages", "miracles", etc. mom and dad do the comparable with them babies; supply them hugs while they be triumphant. a million area discipline is used for unfavorable reinforcement. God punishes people while they have been undesirable. mom and dad do the similar to babies. Now, maximum persons will persist with a Godly existence using fact they admire and love God using a million area unconditional love, and a million area effective reinforcement. If that would not artwork then they worry the a million area discipline. in spite of the indisputable fact that, what's "blessing" and "punishment" from God is subjective. distinctive religions, or maybe persons, might even see some thing as a blessing on a similar time as others see it as a curse. everybody can see notwithstanding they want into some thing. while a mom hugs a new child, it incredibly is incredibly tangible that it incredibly is a hug. yet, while a individual famous $5 on the line is that a blessing? What if it in basic terms helps them to do some thing undesirable? i think of the extra helpful thank you to look at God is that he provides people possibilities. The $5 is an probability. How the guy chooses to apply that probability dictates no remember if it incredibly is a "blessing" or "curse".

well people who are very attached to their beliefs as being right and the more they believe that other beliefs are wrong, the more this puts their own beliefs on a petastal and makes them more fragile and unbalanced (psychologically)

their beliefs are also seen as a part of them so intrinsically that to insult their beliefs, hurts them emotionally, so much so that its almost like you were to physically hit them.

it also comes down to a sense of survival. like if your reasoning which makes them actually question themselves in an uncomfortable way, they feel their life which is attached in these beliefs threatened, which in turn can unleash the 'animal' side of us to do whatever it takes to preserve our beliefs, whether they are right or wrong.

for me it's also illogical because i see us all as connected which is proven by quantum physics like string theory and other ecumenical beliefs of the various religions and spiritualities.

peace bud.

I can't speak for others, as for myself, I don't get upset. Ask away! I just get really sad when people put up their opinions as questions while at the same time belittling others. Very sad.
