There are a group of birds classified as blackbirds. In the US there are a number of birds with the name blackbird: Red-winged Blackbirds, the most common, Tricolored Blackbirds, found only in California, and Yellow-headed Blackbirds. These birds are ictarids, the scientific name for their family. There are other birds that are black, like Crows, European Starlings, Brown-headed Cowbirds. They are not in the same family.

To confuse things even further, in Europe the bird called the Blackbird is a thrush, related to our American Robin.

By telling them that is what they are called. Also explaining that some black birds have absolutely beautiful colorful wings but still are blackbirds. I had a pair of them this Spring that had red and yellow on their wings. Awesome. They would whistle when they needed food. Little stinkers, but I liked them.
