Reporting Rape to the Police
This is generally the way the rape reporting process goes. Each police department though may have a variation of what's below. You can either call the police department or when the officer responds, ask her (most depts. have a woman officer take the rape report to help put you at ease) to explain the procedure before you get started. It may help to reduce your level of fear or anxiety.
Take someone with you to the police station. It is good to have someone familiar with you in a strange place. In most instances, they will be allowed to stay with you all of the time if you want them to. Take someone you feel comfortable talking in front of about what has happened.
INITIAL RESPONSES
1. Patrol unit responds to call.
2. Investigator and coordinator notified and respond.
3. The officer sees to the victim's physical condition and asks preliminary questions. If necessary, the victim is taken to the hospital immediately for treatment and evidentiary exam. Victim advised to:
a. take change of clothing
b. necessity of physical exam, outline of procedures
4. Officer determines the nature of the crime, a description of the assailant, and any other pertinent information to begin the investigation.
5. Officer secures the area and begins examination of crime scene. This ensures that evidence is not destroyed or contaminated.
6. Witnesses are interviewed and preliminary statements are taken.
7. Either before or after the physical exam, the victim is interviewed privately:
a. officer explains necessity for asking specific personal questions
b. officer obtains detailed account of the crime
8. Evidence is collected by initial officer or detectives.
If the police are called, you have the right to: 1) discuss it with the officer and then decide to report, 2) discuss it with the officer and decide not to report, 3) refuse to discuss or report it with the officer. These are your rights!
FOLLOW UP
1. After the physical exam, the investigators will:
a. collect evidence from physical examination
b. determine whether or not the victim can be interviewed at this time.
2. The investigator will first have the victim describe what happened in her own words. Later, she will be asked specific questions to complete the report.
3. Coordinator will assist victim in contacting support person, give her reference and resources and establish subsequent support throughout the process.
ARRESTING THE PERPETRATOR AND COURT
If the perpetrator admits to the police that he did in fact rape you, he will be arrested and charged. He will appear in court fairly quickly and the judge will decide his fate.
If however, as in most cases, he denies it happened the way you said, and maintains he did it with your consent, you have a long, hard fight ahead of you. This will involve many more visits either by the police, or to the police station or district attorney's office, to make further statements, to clarify points, to try and put together a strong case against the perpetrator.
If he is pleading "not guilty," the police have to ensure there is enough evidence to send to the district attorney's office. The district attorney will then decide if there is enough evidence to ensure that they can get a conviction before they decide to take it to trial.
Once it is in the court's hands, it is a waiting game. The perpetrator will probably have to appear in court several times before any trial begins. It is not unusal in cases where the perpetrator has made no contact with the victim, for him to be free "on bail" until the conclusion of the case.
Even if in the end, the district attorney or the court decides there is not enough evidence to take the allegations you have made to trial, at least you did something about it. You showed him that you were not a victim, not someone that would just take what was done to you. You know you were raped, but you also know that you are a survivor, and that makes a big difference in the healing process.

First, you have my deepest empathy if you or a dear one has been victimised in this manner. Without knowing all the details, I have however learnt over the years that, 999 times out of 1000, IT WAS NOT YOUR FAULT, AND YOU DID NOT SOMEHOW "ENCOURAGE" IT.
However, you must report it and at once.If you have not already done so, DO NOT WASH YOURSELF. The doctor will need to collect samples of bodily fluids, hair etc for DNA evidence in order to positively identify the creep who did this to you.
You can insist on a female officer or examiner and you can insist on rape counselling. The longer you delay reporting this despicable incident, the easier you make it for the creep to claim it was "consensual". Go with a strong trusted friend for moral and emotional suport. Do not let anyone bully you or tell you to just forget about it. And while you are at the hospital, insist on getting some immediate contraception. You do not need a lifelong reminder of a dreadful violation of your rights. I'm a pastor, love, but this is once instance where I will insist on emergency contraception.
I feel so angry when I hear this.Rape is just someone bullying a smaller, weaker person simply because it seemed that they could get away with it. It isn't about sexual desire as much as some sickened sense of seeking empowerment. You don't need to have acted "provocatively" in order to "invite" this on yourself. Most women I've counselled after such a evil befell them are cream of the crop, upright and upstanding young ladies with a high sense of modesty and acceptable behavior, usually the type of woman that the rapist realises is so superior to him, that he feels that , since such a lady would not usually have much reason to deal with him socially, then the best way to humiliate her and bring her down to his subterranean level is to invade her privacy in this lowly fashion. Some jerks just want to be able to hold something lewd up against a decent lady in the community because they imagine that this makes them look good to the other guys, only because he envies her good reputation and wants to spoil it. Campuses are the worst place for this. Many a young lady walking between the library and her dorm room of an evening has been assaulted by some lousy inidividual with low self esteem who knows that she'd never date him under normal circumstances and just wants to "get even with her ".
Your reputation can't be spoilt if you were a victim of armed robbery. It ought not to be spoilt if you are a victim of a brutal physical assault.
I really encourage you to go to the authorities.God be with you!!!

One thing you need to do is find someone you can trust and ask them to go with you. Someone who rapes you is always wrong. Know matter what! I was raped 4 years ago by my next door neighbor, as a result I have Post Trumatic stress disorder and my entire life has been ruined. I have lost everything including my home and job and health. I didn't get to report it to the police because I was hospitalized due to my condition and, its harder to bring the assailant to justice later. He is roaming around getting away with doing what he did to me. It is a serious crime and I know the legal system pretty well now. You are the victim they will protect you. Don't let the person get away with it.....You will be surprised how many people do because they are afraid. If you are under 18 you will have to bring and adult with you but, it doesn't matter who it is. Let someone know because there is no need to feel ashamed.

Please go to your nearest hospital, they will help you, and also help you with reporting this. You also need to be checked out to see if you are alright. If you are a girl, they will see if you are pregnant, if a guy they will also help you. Do not wait, so as they can document the crime as soon as possible. Do not be afraid of reporting this as you will be doing the next person that they rape a huge favor by getting them off the streets. This person needs to be accountable for their actions. I hope that you can see that by making them pay for what they did will be a blessing, because the next person may get killed in the process. Take care of yourself and God Speed.

You need to go to the hospital to report it. The nurse will do a rape kit and call the police. She can sit with you while you talk to them. They will try to send you a female detective.
You HAVE to do this. He's probably raped before and because someone else didn't file charges....he was able to do this to you.
Go get him.

You could go to the hospital instead, or call to report it. But there's no need to be afraid. The police are there to help you.

you need to go to the station as soon as possible. the longer you wait, the more the evidence will deteriorate. you have probably already bathed... people who are raped should NOT take a bath or shower, because this washes away evidence.
please don't be afraid to go to the police. too many rapes go unreported... and that lets the bastard who did it get away with it to do it to someone else. be strong!
