can't use my mobile so need the cheapest method to call home and can they be used through the hotel phone system

Go to any gas station all of them sell phone card!!! each phone cars have different rates and are one sale for about $5.00 or 2.50 sterlings

Phone cards are not the way to go. What you need to do is get on the Internet and subscribe to Pingo.com. You will need to register and have a credit card, but they provide really cheap calls US to UK using a land line by dialling a specific number and code in first.
All my US calls come this way. Vice versa is Simply Call... UK to US at 2p per minute.
And, just so you know; American mobiles DO NOT work for International calls unless you buy an International-specific phone (which is really expensive). Their mobile system doesn't work like ours does...
