1.Find a diamond broker or dealer in a "diamond district." I know New York and London both have diamond districts. If you live in a big city, your's probably has one. If not, go to your closest big city that has brokers or a diamond district. Try to make sure whoever you buy from is reputable. Ask for a written appraisal

2. Shop around and haggle! If you buy retail, you will be ripped off!

3. After buying, immediately get your own appraisal. Immediately!

P.S. I am very serious about the haggling!

My husband got my ring from Kay's, and we were both really happy. My suggestion is that no matter where you buy it from, make sure you have a good warantee on the diamonds. About a month after I got mine, one of the diamonds fell out, but it wasn't a big deal becuase Kay's replaced it for free because of the lifetime warantee that was pruchased.

You need to find a diamond wholesaler, like the jeweler's district in Boston or New York. Find out if your city has a place like that, or you may need to travel to a major city. And you should always select everything separately (stone, setting, ring). Go with princess cut.

actually ebay has great jewelry. It's not used - it's new. There are alot of brokers who sell on ebay. You also get to see other peoples reviews. I got my fiancees there and it's beautiful. I had it appraised and it actually appraised for more than the broker said it would.

For exceptional value and price why not go to a pawnbroker. My fiance and I went there and purchased both of our rings and saved huge on them.

I suggest Shane Co. or a vintage store, you could get a victorian diamond ring, or diamond with ruby (my fave), its important to know what the bride would like...like what are her favorite stones?
