I have a 115 lb 2 yr old Rott and my boss has a 1 yr old Great Dane. Sadly though, my boss is moving out of town and he can't take his dog with him. He has bought his dog up to our job on several occasions and the dog is very sweet and loving. He recently asked me if i want the dog. I have a large, fenced in yard so space isn't a problem, but i a little concerned about how my dog would get along with the Dane. They are both male dogs and my dog is a little territorial. My boss said he would rather see me take the dog than give him to a shelter or sell him to someone that he doesn't know. I really love this dog and would like to have him, so my boss is going to bring the Dane over to my house this week end just to see if they get along. Is this a good idea or am i asking for trouble? My boss said all dogs are a little territorial but once they meet and get used to being around each other everything will be fine. Any experts out there that can help me with this?

If both dogs are fixed and are social, they could get along. But, you need to make sure that your Rottie, and the Dane both are well socialized or there could be some problems.

it would probably be best that the two dogs not meet at either of their houses. Since you say your dog is territorial, he may be on the defensive if the first time he meets the dane is on his 'turf'. I would suggest introducing them at a neutral site, such as a local park. Then start by taking them on a walk together and just let them get to know each other. You might also want to set up 3-4 meetings like this first.
When you do finally introduce the dane to your home, be sure that you don't bring the dane in while the rottie is already there. Try meeting your boss with dane just down the street from your house (bring your rottie) and then walking with both dogs back to your house...by this time they should be used to walking together and when you get to your house, you will be bringing them both in.....rather than bringing the 'new' dog into the 'old' dogs territory.
Hope this helps.

My parents have a rottie (German rott, 160 pounds... big boy like yours :) ) and have fostered many rotts over the years, and I totally agree with having the dogs meet on neutral ground. If your dog is territorial, its best not to do it at your home, or in your yard.
Keep both apart, on their leashes and let them sniff from a distance, slowly move your dog closer to the dane, giving him praise if he's being a good boy, (if your rott is like my parents, he's a people pleaser too :) )
Don't expect an instant kinship, both dogs will likely be on edge and a bit stressed out, if they have never met before.
Finally move both dogs close to each other, but leave no slack on the leashes, so you can pull the dogs apart if there is an issue.
At this point, it will either be going of or awry... and you can go from there.
Good luck!

When first introducing the new dog, it might be a good idea to have them in different rooms, separated by a door. At least for a few hours. That way they can get used to the smell of each other as they sniff around the door before they meet face to face. It might be a little rough at first, but if both dogs have been properly socialized, you should be fine.

If you interduce them slowely to each other, then they should be fine. Keep in mind though that one of the dogs will have to be the alpha male, so there will be some fighting until that is established.

Yes you should take the dog. but eventaully the great dane will get fed up and attack the Rott Weiler. The Rott Wieler might (will) attack back and then the fight is over pretty much. try to get them to share toys. That might help.

I am not an expert, but if both males are "fixed" you have a better chance. Their co-existance can be forced with professional training.

to introduce them do it on neutral territory...such as a dog park,a parking lot, ball field...dont try to introduce them on your dogs home territory......they can get along if both are animal friendly...it would also help if they are neutered...dont feed them together and if your dog has toys he likes pick them up until you know how they react to sharing....good luck I hope it works !!!!!
