okay, I am not an expert at gimp, however, here are some possibiities for you.

Here: http://www.plasticbugs.com/index.php?p=241 you can get the Gimpshop ... which is the Gimp in a photoshop style interface. It might be more user friendly to work with.

Also, all of the programs below are totally free, you might try some of them as well, as they may be more suited for your particular needs. Take a few out for a test drive!!
