I have a Dell computer that has a COA sticker with the Windows XP product key on it. I am building myself a new computer to replace the Dell. Can I use the product key on the COA as the product key for my new computer? I will be keeping the COA if so, so that nobody else can use that same key.

That key is volume licensing. And like it was mentioned before, it was meant for a dell machine. Your key is not unique. What also may happen is when you load that o.s on your new system the cd will tell you that the key is invalid. To save your self the hassle and headache just buy a new copy.

Legally you're not allowed to use that copy of Windows on another computer since it is most likely a OEM licence. These only allow you to use it on the equipment it was originally installed on.

In strictly technical terms, it could be possible to use the key on another if you have the installation media that came with your Dell. However, I don't know if those copies are taylored to Dell computers (ex. missing drivers, etc), but that's a whole other problem. I also do not know if that OEM key would work with a different Windows CD.

Nope im sory you ll need a new copy of Windows because the product key of your Dell is registered on your dell and it can only be registered on one pc so thats why.
