I am wanting to buy wine, and store it for certain occassions. Whether it is dinner that night, or a special anniversary. I was just not sure if a wine cooler was necessary to store it, or if it is just a fancy thing to have? What are the benefits of having one, as opposed to just keeping it on the counter. Thanks.

Well it depends on what kind of wine you are considering storing. For the most part they are just a fancy thing to have. Personally I don't use one the Great bottles of wine I have I keep stored in a box lined with towels in the garage. The garage is dark & cool & thw wine will store well there. The not so great bottles are in a wine rack in my dinning room. So I would say sure you could buy one I see how if you don't have a good cool dark place to store it, it could be beneficial but... it's your call.

Wine should be kept in a cool, dark place. Wine continues to age in the bottle, and therefore excesses of light and oxygen can cause it to deteriorate faster if these conditions exist. If kept properly, wine will stay good for years. Do not open a bottle of wine unless you can finish it within a week or two. A wine cooler is a nice accessory, but it is not neccessary as most basements are cool enough to slow the deterioration process. As far as leaving wine on the counter, don't - it will be exposed to excess light, which will harm the wine (this is why most wine comes in dark bottles, but the more light we keep away from it, the better). Also, white wine seems to react better to cooling than red, and red wine seems to enjoy being kept warmer. You don't need a cooler - A cool, dark place is good enough...

Traditionally red wine is served at room temp, and white/blush wines are served chilled, however some people, like me, enjoy a chilled glass of red. I am no fancy pants, but I don't believe that a wine fridge is necessary for storing either kind of wine. As long as you prevent any kind from getting excessively hot (keep below like 80 degrees) your wine won't spoil. Thats why rich people have "wine cellars" is to keep it cool, not cold. I keep my red and my white in the fridge even after it has been opened so it's ready to go, I guess. Any corked bottle will go bad after a considerable amount of time no matter what temperature you store it at. Hope I've helped.

Well it's good to keep wine at a temp of like 55 degrees and some people like to keep their wine in a wine fridge....

You may want to go with whites that can be refridgerated..like german reisling? that's a good wine but it's kinda sweet if you like sweet wine..then there are really great white wines like Loire valley white and another good one is Franz Kuntzler white wine which is awesome..a littel expensive ..like $30..0 a bottle...

a wine fridge helps so that wine will oxidize slower. It tends to get a vinegar-ey taste if it sets out opened for any amount of time. this just keeps it at a constant temp that is lower than room temo.

If you want your wine to be cold, then it is good to get a wine cooler.
