No -- that's what Americans are for.

If you take "hillbilly" to mean, as it sometimes does when used disparagingly, "ignorant" or "unsophisticated," then anyone who considered French Canadians that way would be "hillbillies" themselves, don't you think? I'm quite sure there are ignorant, unsophisticated people in Canada, as there are everywhere else in the world. No matter where they live, people's ignorance and prejudices have nothing to do with the language they speak and everything to do with the way they choose to embrace generalizations and stereotypes instead of learning to think for themselves.

Of course, you might say I'm biased myself, since I happen to be French Canadian, more specifically Québécoise... and mighty proud of it! So perhaps in that other sense of the word, I am indeed a hillbilly, in that I am proud of my heritage and generally try to resist being assimilated into the dominant English culture – even if I do speak the language. (And a good thing, too, or how would I be able to respond to questions like this?)

Check out the very informative Wikipedia article on "hillbilly" for a clear definition, a description of the stereotype, modern usage, etc. (see URL under Sources below).

P.S. I totally agree with Barbados Chick on the "bad taste" of the comments about Newfoundlanders. That type of offensive posting needs to be reported as abuse on this forum.

EDIT: Wow! A bad rating on my answer! Somebody just proved my point about ignorance and prejudice... Imagine the gall of feeling pride in your culture and wanting to preserve it. Shame on me!

LOL only if you marry your mothers brothers cousins sisters monkies uncle twice removed.........but seriously no they arent. Some of the biggest learning institutions in our country can be found in Quebec and most of the people that live in that province have more culture and learning then other places. Many of the French Canadians that live in this country are highly intelligent people and are quick to temper and easily offended by ignorance. I know because most of my family is French Canadian.

No they are just considered a little stuck up and a little full of them selves and the reason for that is because they keep trying to become there own country. Hillbillies are uncivilized French Canadians are not that.

No of course not. Most of them help to found this great nation of ours. Many engineers, scientists and great people helped to invent most of the things than Americans make claim to.

Remember Americans are good salesmen but they make lousy engineers. Leave engineering to Germans, Scots and Canadians.

I do not think we have any Hill Billies in Canada, but thank you for asking. As for the bad comments about Newfoundlanders - very poor taste.
