I am half-Mexican, and my Dad took me to Mexico when I was younger--not to a resort, but to a small town in rural Mexico. I wasn't allowed to drink the water or have ice or anything. I think the reason is because the water is not purified to the same standard as the U.S. So, if you go to Mexico, drink bottled drinks.

Yes it's true. Don't take any chances. I went to Cancun and thought I was being careful. I think I ate some lettuce that had been rinsed in the local water, then spent two days on the toilet.

If you're staying in a resort in Cancun, Puerto Vallarta , Los Cabos etc, you can drink the water in the resorts only. If you venture outside of the resorts bring bottled water with you. The resorts purify the water for their guests.

I got sick once from the ice cubes and spent a day of my vacation in bed. And had to pay $10 for a tiny bottle of Pepto-Bismol. Don't let this happen to you.

You should not, unless you don't mind spending time on the toilet. Be carefull about drinks with ice in them too.
