Is the Amtrak station in Rockford, IL close to downtown Rockford? From the map I looked at, it seems like the station's just outside the major urban area. Can I walk from the train station to the downtown area, and if not, is it easy to use a city bus and/or a taxi?

To the person who answered that the Amtrak station in Rockford is abandoned:
Amtrak's website lists scheduled trips to that station. Are you sure it's closed?

Yes you can walk from the abandoned station to downtown. It is actually on the south end of downtown. Amtrak stopped service to Rockford years ago so there is no passenger service anymore. There is a push to get rail service back but that's years down the road. I know all this because I live in Rockford. Plan some other transportation, rail won't work for you.

ADDITIONAL INFO:
I have lived in Rockford for 28 years. There is no Amtrack service. People that use Amtrack have to go to Mendota, Il or Chicago. Mendota is a good hour drive south and Chicago is 90 miles to the east. Trust me on this one.
