Its actually not true that it just helps you relax. Their are many benefits. For one thing It improves circulation. The knots and adhesions within your muscles can be caused by improper posture, injurie, unbalanced muscle strength and others. They act like glue on the muscle to prevent it from stretching and contracting to its full capacity. This obviously reduces its strength and, in turn, puts excessive strain on other muscles or other areas within the muscle. When these are removed /reduced the muscle or muscle group is stronger and looser, which removes excess stress on other adjacent areas. Not to mention muscles can put pressure on nerves which then get impinged and that can cause any number of symptoms. Ever known somone to have numbness and tingling in their arm? A lot of times that is the brachial nerve getting pinched by the muscles in the neck and shoulders. Many times the muscles in the neck and shoulders can become too tight from sitting over a computer for many hours a day or from doing a lot of push-ups and no back exercises to balance out strength and posture.
