Chelsea,
Thanks for wanting to serve our great country. It's never to early to set goals and work toward them. If you should decide on joining one of the five services you could be sent anywhere in the world, even in the CG. Remember: service means sacrifice(ei. leaving home to acomplish a mission you have been given). I would also recommend that your parents accompany you to the recruiters when you talk to them. Prepare questions and ask you parents to do the same. And make sure you get what ever the recruiter says in writing on the contract before you sign. This doesn't guarantee that you'll get what you want but it should guarantee that you will get the opportunity to get it if you meet all the requirements.
Best of luck to you.

the coast guard goes all around the world and the chances of you not being far away from home are low. for one get on the coast guard website and see where their boot camps are operated and really look at the info on them, get on a coast guard blog and see how the real coast guard ppl live and feel. also you might consider being a reservist, they go through boot camp and come home to serve, they are commonly referred to as weekend warriors, they serve two weekends a month and one week a year BUT they many are called up for service in iraq. joining the military is a huge decision and life changing and if you don't want to travel its probably not the best option for you as there is a lot and often in some branches of the service. why not consider college instead? maybe in a year or so you will reconsider the military but know this its not a easy life, its low pay, lots of thankless work, travel and being away from home. boot camp alone in the army is now 9-12 KS and you don't see your family until the end of it, then there is advanced training in their specified jobs another 9-13 wks, then being deployed to another state or country. i have a friend whose daughter was just deployed to south korea they will not see her for at least a year and possibly a year and a half...can you do that? think long and hard about any decision you make and make sure you get all the facts first too.

Ok if you want to do miltary start doing rotc to become an officer dont let the recruiters lie to you it is difficult to get commisioned after your enlisted. The recruiters have more bull*#@! than a farmer so your parents there is probly a good idea. Have an Idea of what you want to do. Get a job before you leave if they try to make you go open don't back out. If I had it to do over again I would have gone Air Guard. Once you complete your training you can go active guard which means you do your job 5 days a week in civilain cloths and 1 weekend a month you go in and work in uniform. It is a very big decision so It really does not hurt to start looking into it now.

Never ask army people about naval affairs all you get is muddy responses. It sounds like you are on the right track as long as you know what it is you want from the coast guard its say 10 years down the line do you want a career with them or is this a stepping stone to further your education? If it's the career go for it . If it's for the education money see if you can find another way to fund your education as mixing the military up with your education will only make things harder for you as by the time you go to college you've forgotten everything. As a money source of last resort it will do just fine.

The best part of the military is the travel! I was in the USMC from 1989-1993. in those four short years i went to 14 countries on 4 continents. i also saved several thousand lives evacuating people from Liberia during the civil war of 1990.
When my four years was up i went to college paid for by the Military GI Bill. All through HS i wanted to join the marines. i signed up duirng the summer between junior and senior year on "delayed entry" as soon as high school was over i was being yelled at by drill instructors.
you are never too young to think about the future but the coast guard dosent always stay at home. Alaska, Hawaii, Japan, all have CG stations.

Being a retired Army sergeant I can tell you a lot about the military, But that wouldn't answer your question. Are you too young? Well yes and no, you are not to young to start thinking about your career goals, and military service is an honorable and rewarding career,. If you do decide to join the Coast Guard, don't try to limit yourself to staying so close to home, part of military service is the chance to see other places and still be able to return home. Best wishes in your decision.

If you're wanting to be in the navy or coast gaurd, why did your question say "army people"? You still have time to think about which branch you want to join... If you don't want to leave.. maybe the reserves would be good for you. My husband joined the Marines hoping he would stay on the East coast so he would be close to Ohio... he ended up in Japan for two years, California and Iraq.

You are right in considering Coast Guard over Navy because naval deployment can mean spending time far from your loved ones. Find out as much as you can before enlisting. If possible, high school qualifications will help you somewhat, to get in and in terms of starting pay.

Honestly if you don't want to be too far from home I would go for National Guard or Air Force. Coast guard can work too, but when you go somewhere you can be gone for months at a time, but that is true for any branch or service. I think if you feel like the military is where you want to go then go for it. I'd defiantly stay away from the Navy, Marines or Army, not because they aren't reputable, rewarding branches of the service, but because they tend to be away from home a bit. My husband is in the Army and is serving in Iraq at the moment, but he loves to serve his country no matter where it takes him. Thank you though for wanting to serve our country. What ever branch you decide on God bless you and good luck.

Well, the Coast Guard doesn't mean you'll be stationed near home. Like any of the services, you go where they need you.
I have a friend who has a Son and Daughter in the Coast Guard (one stationed at Corpus Christi, TX and one in California) and they like it.
Good Luck. Oh, I have 34 1/2 years with the US Army and I wouldn't do anything else.
