Hi, I have lived in Cairns - anywhere there are people there is crime but I have always found Cairns a safe city.
If you are a scientist the main outdoor jobs revolve around research in the rainforest or the marine biology of the Great Barrier Reef.
Because of the Great Barrier Reef there are no waves in Northern Queensland beaches - big difference to Hawaii.

I live in Cairns myself, it is a friendly place with tons of things to do & see.
Crime is everywhere in the world, so it depends what you really mean, I have lived here for 7 years in perfect safety.
The weather is perfect nearly 90% of the time.
Cairns is also the gate way to the Cape York Penninsula, a four wheel drive mecca, a paradise for the avid four wheel driver. A beautiful Ocean drive takes you through the famous Port Douglas where you may catch a glimpse of a famous person or even a signed autograph from some one famous, I have a photo of Anjelina Jolie signed by herself, just 70 k's away.
we have the Table Lands over the Range, which has many small towns, each with its own unique story.
Further west we have the oldest cave system known, Undara Lava Rocks & Caves at Undara, on the way the Innott Hot springs.
Every where, there are fresh creeks to swim in, like the Babinda Boulders just 60k's south.
The Great Barrier Reef at our doorstep, Cairns climate is nearly always perfect 27c to 32c. We have a world class Casino with a Dome for some of the local wildlife including a big Estuary Crocodile, half way up that ocean drive to Port Douglas is a small Zoo & also a wildlife park.
Head north ward via the Kuranda Range is the small Village of Karanda, that is a must visit, with a sky Rail to take & return you from Cairns.
Further on is Mareeba, it boasts a wetlands wildlife Zoo with exotic animals from all over the world, Mareeba Zoo, also the North East Australian Royal flying Airforce has 2 museums, just 80kms away. We have the rarest rainforest animals like the flightless bird the Cassorwary, it has an axe like horn on its head with blue plumage & stands about 5 to 6 foot tall.
The Platypus, Tree Kangeroos, ect ect, I have to admit, you really have to live here to see it all.
I will be doing private tours to any of the destinations late next year in a brand new Four Wheel Drive, ready for a road trip around the Cairns area to a full on adventure to the tip of Cape York Penninsula returning a different way.
