Hello,
For the past few days, i believe I have been been fighting off a cold. For the most part, I feel relatively OK. I've been getting lots of rest, and taking Airborne. But this morning when I woke up, I spit up (through my mouth, not nose) a little bit of green/yellow mucus. Can you have discolored mucus if you have a cold? During the day, when I happen to blow my nose, everything that come sout is clear. I live in a dorm,a nd the student meical center is not open on weekends. Should I try to go today, or should I wait until monday? My other symptoms (not that bad) are post nasal drip, slight runny/stuffy nose, and always clearing my throat. Also, it couldn't be like the onset of bronchtis or pnuemonia, can it? Thanks for you r help.

When to Call a Doctor - If any of the following symptoms of acute sinusitis appear:
thick yellowish green mucus nasal discharge
At the same time, you may try the following self-care remedies:
It's important to drink lots of water or other fluids--six to eight glasses daily--to loosen impacted mucus. Soup, - good old soul warming chicken soup - tea, or other warm liquids can be especially soothing.
To help thin mucus, heat water in a pan. Place a towel over your head, lean over the pan of hot water, and inhale the steam. Adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the water will enhance this effect.
Apply a hot compress (a moistened warm hand towel or wash cloth) to your face. The heat "opens up" sinuses to relieve pressure.
Reduce or avoid drinking alcohol; it has a dehydrating effect that can make mucus dry and thick.
A sinus irrigator, which you can purchase in drug stores and health-food stores, can be used to clear out sinuses with saline solution.
Avoid air-borne irritants, especially secondhand smoke, that can inflame sinuses. Use an air purifier in your home, if necessary, to control irritants. If indoor air is dry, which can aggravate sinusitis, use a humidifier.
Quercetin is being used widely for sinus problems. - Get a vitamin C with Quercetin - from a Health store. ( 3x/day - 500 -1000 mg )
Do not take any chewable Vitamin C - they have extra sugar, and not good for immune system.
Though there have been no major scientific studies conducted to support this theory, some experts believe spicy foods, such as horseradish, Japanese wasabi, garlic, or cayenne pepper, may help clear out congested sinuses.

I am a chronic bronchitus and pnemonia person and you should be worried only if you are bringing up hard, brown to dark green mucus.
If it is brown it is coming from the brochial cavities and tubes in the lungs. I think as of right now you just have a cold adn there is some new stuff available over the counter called Mucinex. This helps break up congestion in the chest adn nasal passages. Taking airborne at this point really isnt providing you with much.
I would stick to this:
drinking alot of clear fluids (water, pedialyte)
eating soups and toasts
taking a vitamin with plenty of potassium adn Vitamin b, c d and e
taking the mucinex stuff and
getting plenty of rest and relaxation.
With the weekend here you should be feeling better by monday.
If not then I would go to the dr's or the student medical center. Casue at that point the virus/infection is overpowering your body and you need antibiotics to help fight it off.
Godd lUck, from one sicky to another =D

It soundds as if you have a common cold virus, and it seems to be running its course. The mucus will go from clear to yellow or green then towards the end; clear again. If you begin to develop a cough that cannot be controlled with normal OTC medicines then it may have developed into an infection of the upper respritory tract that may require a dr. to prescribe antibiotics to combat. Also infections/or flu will usually be accompanied by a fever.

I really think you spit up drainage from your post nasal drip, but if your nose blowing produces clear mucus, that pretty much eliminates a sinus infection, so it could be from your lungs. Since it is coming up on the weekend, go on to the clinic. Better safe than sorry. Good luck!

Yes it is - I was 39 week pregnant - 3cm dialted and 30 % effaced. Never lost my mucus plug until I got to the hospital. My contractions kept getting stronger and my water didn't break until I strated pushing. Than I went to 7 cm and 90% within an hour 10 minutes later he was born. I advise you to go to the hospital if you feel you are in labor

You have a cold.
Mucous often turns from watery and clear into thick and green or yellow as your virus runs its course. Running to the doctor for antibiotics will not help you.
The wives tale of green mucous indicating infection is sadly mistaken.
If your cold symptoms have worsened overall, certainly see your doctor.
From what it sounds like, you definitely have the common cold.
Going to the doctor's office with all the other idiots sitting there thinking antibiotics will cure a virus will likely expose you to a new rhinovirus and prolong your nagging symptoms.

It sounds as though your 'Sinuses' have been infected. The doctors will normally prescribe'a course of antibiotics to clear it.
If you can not reach a doctor, you can try and obtain Homepoathic medicine called 'Hepar sulphuris calcareum'
Also increase your intake of Vitamin C and Zinc AND drink plenty of fluids.
Also try talking to your local pharmacist who can recommend something over the counter....god bless

Green, yellow, grey, or any combination there of is a sure sign of infection. Go get some antibiotics while you can. I also remind you to wash your hands frequently, and don't sniffle the germs back into a warm, moist, dark enviorment to grow more. Blow your nose when it runs. And if you cough up something, spit it out!
As a nurse I think there's only one thing worse than a sniffling, snot nose kid and that's a sniffling snot nose adult who should know better by now.
