Common sense would dictate that the Church of Christ, the one He personally founded for all mankind, would be the one which can show a 2,000 year history. For example, there is no mention of an "Orthodox Church" in any historical writing before the 10th Century. No historical record of any Protestant church before the 16th Century. But there are written historical documents by the Holy Catholic Church and about the Holy Catholic Church, by that name, dating back to bishops of the Church who knew the Apostles personally. It's really an open and shut case. Many people have many reasons for not wanting to accept the historical truth. But that doesn't make it any less true.

The church you know today, a body of imperfect, by serving and loving believers that mess everything up until they get to Heaven. But they are still not of this world, if they live for him. Read Chapter 17 before you read 18

In 17, Christ is speaking about the local congregation.
It should be noted that, originally, Christ used the word "church" not more than a handfull of times in the Bible. In most Bibles, the word "church" has been substituted for the word "kingdom" about half the time. Originally, "kingdom" appeared about 250 times...now only about 125 times in the NT.

It is the Holy Catholic Church
Rev. 1:18; 3:7; 9:1; 20:1 - Jesus' "keys" undeniably represent authority. By using the word "keys," Jesus gives Peter authority of faith and morals
Matt. 16:19 - Peter holds keys to this new Davidic kingdom and rules while the real King of David (Jesus) is in heaven.
Luke 12:41-42 - when Peter asks Jesus if the parable of the master and the kingdom was meant just for the apostles or for all people, Jesus rhetorically confirms to Peter that Peter is the chief steward over the Master's household of God. "Who then, (Peter) is that faithful and wise steward whom his master will make ruler over His household..?"
Peter was the first Pope.

Like they said this is referring to the local Christian peoples. The first church was established after Christ. It was the Orthodox church. It is called apostolic and catholic. Catholic meaning universal not Roman Catholic. The Roman Catholic church was a split from Orthodox.

The church of those who've committed their lives to him.
The church bound together by the Holy Spirit.
He speaks of a spiritual church, not one of manmade authority.
I've gone to foreign countries and met Christians whove had as much in common with me as people in my home "church"

The universal Church is the simply the body of christ. The word "church" does not mean a building as commonly used today but rather the body of christ.
