The Scandinavian form comes from a nickname derived from Old Norse bua "to live".
The Chinese form means "a wave".
It has a frisky meaning however you look at it. However, I can't name any famous Bo's. But there was a famous "Beau" (with the same pronounciation: Beau Brummell!)

I have no idea what it would mean in Afrikaans. "Bo" isn't a popular South African name. But translated literally it means "up" or "on top."
E.g. "Kyk bo" - "Look up".
Only "famous" person I can think of is Bo Derek!
