S2 refers to the Sacrum region of the spine. It is located at the same level as the pelvis. There are 5 vertebrae in the sacrum, referred to as S1-S5.
FYI: The uppermost vertebrae of the spine are called Cervical of which there are 7, C1-C7. Below that is the Thoracic region, located in the chest area of the spine. There are 12 vertebrae, referred to as T1-T12. Then comes the Lumbar region in the low back. There are 5, referred to as L1-L5. The lumbar region is connected to the sacrum and the sacrum is connected to the (go ahead, you know the tune, sing along if you like!) Coccyx. The coccyx has 3 vertebrae for which there is no abbreviation, it's called the tailbone.

I type a lot of X-ray reports, but have not often come across this "S2" expression. I checked on Google just now too, and it seems it is one of the sacro-iliac joints - which as you suspect are in the lower spine, where the pelvis is joined to the large triangular bone (sacrum) beneath the lumbar spine.

Yes, it is located toward the bottom of the spinal column.
It is located in the Sacral Vertebrae section of the spine, whish explains the "s" and the "2" is the locator in the "s" section. So the "S2" vertebrae is the second vertebrae from the top of the Sacral Vertebrae section of the spinal column.

It is most commonly known as the tail-bone.
