if you plan on doing more than 1000km per month, then I would suggest a diesel. it will be cheaper to run. Diesels can also give you over 17km/litre in the city. The best value small car diesel is the Indica Turbo DLG. It is also large and spacious.
If you are doing less then 1000 km per month, then stick to a petrol. The maruti Alto is the most fuel efficient car in this segment because of its small size and light weight. The best value for money is the Indica Xeta which comes at the same price as an alto, and is larger and much more powerful than any other car in the class, but is also not as fuel efficient. Other fuel efficient options include the WagonR but the upfront cost is nearly Rs. 80K more than an alto or Indica

In petrol version try Maruti Alto, it has the best mileage in its class. In diesel go for TATA Indica Turbo. But diesels are a bit more costly to maintain. In bigger cars Hundai Accent CRDI is better.

economy in wat sense?
1) if budget constraint is there then wagon R with gas kit - its very economical or indica with diesel
2) if need to show off then esteem, etc...
