You should eat before and after exercise to maintain a healthy body. Take high fiber foods about 2 or 3 hours before getting exercise. Oat, bread, juice, pasta, fruit like banana or energy bar are among the good foods you can eat before exercise.

It is always better to eat afterwords.Everyone will tell you to fuel up first. That is in fact dead wrong. When you eat before you work out you do not fuel your muscle.Muscles work off of glycogen(stored carbohydrate) and other macronutrients once converted to glucose through gluconeogenisis or ketosis. These nutrients are transported to the mitochondria of the cells by insulin.
By raising your blood glucose right before a work out(eating anything will do this to some degree but carbs are the worst) you're more likely to secrete insulin to control your blood sugar. This will mitigate the secretion of many beneficial androgens and growth factors(not just needed for bigger muscles).
Conversely, eating a good meal or meal replacement shake after is more likely to replace glycogen stores and shunt nutrients away from fat cells(adipose tissue).Always work out on an empty stomach.Carbing up should be done the day before.Glycogen is not stored instantaneously. It takes time.
You will NOT burn off the calories that you've just ingested.
Here's a Yahoo! link that will dispel much of the nonsense you may hear.

I go to the gym early enough where I am not yet hungry. BUT if I am hungry, I will eat a granola bar (only 90 calories) and head out. Drink water, too, of course :) Do what feels best for you. All the things you mentioned are healthy, so if you want to snack, give it a go!

Definitely not. Carbs before working out are fine. However wait 30min to an hour before working out. After your workout ingest protein.
