He is not painted white or satirically presented as the typical "white man" as the minstrels were. The story is a modern adaptation that doesn't link to the story directly. If the minstrels were merely playing a character that was traditionally black or even were painted black and playing non satirical characters it would not be a big deal. Robert downy junior just played a black character in tropic thunder. A mighty heart - the orginal character was black but played by Angelina Jolie. These two examples were made up to look black as well. Laurence Olivier played the notoriously black Othello at the national theatre.
